Western to Partner with Fairhaven Middle School on 'Monologue Project 8' Dec. 5-7

BELLINGHAM 鈥 Western Washington University鈥檚 Department of Theatre and Dance will present 鈥淢onologue Project 8鈥 in conjunction with Fairhaven Middle School at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5 through Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center at 1314 Harris Ave. in Bellingham.
Awarded a Bellingham Mayor鈥檚 Arts Award in 2008, the collaboration between Western and Fairhaven Middle School originally began in 2005 and has grown every year.聽 This year鈥檚 production includes more than 40 never-before-seen original monologues.
The performances will include both Western actors and Fairhaven Middle School students.聽 Some Fairhaven students will perform their own monologues while others will perform monologues written by their classmates.聽 Each performance will be followed by a talkback with the audience, during which the playwrights and actors will share their experiences.聽聽聽聽
Tickets to the performance are $8 for general admission and $5 for student admission, and are available at the door on the day of the show. 聽Payments must be cash or check only.
The 鈥淢onologue Project 8鈥 began this October with the seventh-grade Language Arts classes at Fairhaven Middle School, taught by Joel Gillman, as they learned a variety of ways to communicate their personal experiences, thoughts and passions through the medium of dramatic writing.聽 Exploring a range of voices, each student wrote up to 12 monologues.
The finished monologues were given to Professor James Lortz鈥檚 acting class at Western as part of the course鈥檚 service learning component.聽 Each college acting student selected and performed two monologues for the playwrights in November at Western鈥檚 Old Main Theatre.聽 The Fairhaven Middle School students were able to hear the voices of their peers and their own words come to life through the art of performance, and each actor and playwright were given the chance to meet and discuss their views on the experience.
