BELLINGHAM – Western Washington University will offer two courses for writers and editors this spring; the courses are open to the public and formal admission to Western is not required.

These two courses are:

  • Writing Children’s Literature – Writers with a passion for children’s books will experiment and sample the field of children’s fiction and nonfiction, including picture books, chapter books, middle-grade books and books for young adults. This three-part series taught by professional writers will focus on essential literary elements such as plot, character, setting, dialogue, and that all-important first chapter.
Classes meet from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesdays from April 3 through June 5 on the Western Washington University campus. Two information sessions will take place from 4-5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11 and 5:45-6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13 at Village Books in Fairhaven.
  • Knock Out Editing: From Polish to Publish – The first draft of a story or essay can be wonderfully inspired—and unfinished. For many writers, the grueling stretch begins when it’s time to revise and rearranging a few commas isn’t going to cut it. Learn developmental editing techniques successful writers and editors use to turn a good start into a great final draft with minimal artistic pain.
Classes meet 6:30-9:30 p.m. on Thursdays from April 5-26 on the Western Washington University campus. Information sessions will take place noon-1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 and 5:45-6:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 1 at Village Books in Fairhaven.

The writing and editing courses are offered through Western Washington University Extended Education.  Extended Education offers additional courses to the public in the areas of emergency management online certification, graduate school test preparation online, project management, web design and more.
