POULSBO, Wash. – Western Washington University will offer a lecture series and professional development opportunities this fall at their newly dedicated Western Washington University Center at Olympic College in Poulsbo.

The fall Western Lecture Series will explore topics surrounding environmentalism, drawing on the expertise of Western’s Huxley College of the Environment, which has a long-standing history on the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas.

The Western Lecture Series will offer two free fall events open to the community:

• “Wood to Wing: Envisioning an Aviation Biofuels Industry” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in Room 221 at the Olympic College Poulsbo campus.  Steve Hollenhorst, professor and dean of Huxley College of the Environment, will discuss the promise and challenges of transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable biofuels, with a particular focus on commercial and military aviation needs.
• “Health of the Salish Sea: Toxic Contaminants in the Food Web” at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13, in Room 221 at the Olympic College Poulsbo campus. Jennifer Lanksbury, a marine ecotoxicologist at the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Puget Sound Ecosystem Monitoring Program, will discuss how organisms are exposed to contaminants, which species are monitored for toxins and the health effects of toxic exposure. Lanksbury will also examine data on emerging contaminants and methods used in monitoring new species.

In addition to the lecture series, Western will also offer a professional development opportunity for local business men and women on the peninsulas.  Dan Purdy, instructor for the Western College of Business and Economics, will lead a three-session course on Real Simple Project Management. The course is designed to help professionals employ lean project management principles to their everyday work. The Real Simple Project Management course will consist of hands-on workshops with exercises and discussions.  Participants will identify, design, and execute a project over the two-week period. The first session is scheduled from noon – 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, in Room 212 at the Olympic College Poulsbo campus.

Both the lectures and professional development offerings are the first in an annual series, with community events scheduled for fall, winter and spring quarters.

On July 17, President David Mitchell, Olympic College, and President Bruce Shepard, Western Washington University, formally announced their expanded partnership and the creation of the Western Washington University Center at Olympic College in Poulsbo at a special event at Olympic College in Poulsbo.  This expansion is part of a joint vision to serve the community and businesses on the Peninsulas.
