Western's Window magazine honored for excellence in writing
Western Washington University’s magazine was honored recently with two regional awards for excellence in writing from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.
“,” won a Gold Award in the Individual Features or Feature Articles category of the 2013 CASE District VIII Communications Awards. District VIII includes colleges and universities in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska and Western Canada.
The story, by Spokane freelance writer Kevin Taylor, tells the of University of Washington medical student and 草榴社区 Presidential Scholar Analiesse Isherwood (’11), who has made several humanitarian trips to Haiti since before the devastating earthquake three years ago. It appeared in the spring 2012 edition of the magazine.
In the same edition, “,” by Seattle freelance writer Sheila Farr (’94) received a Bronze Award. Farr’s story described the substantial artistic legacy of art patrons Virginia Wright and her late husband, Bagley Wright at Western Washington University and the Pacific Northwest.
The full list of awards will be announced at the CASE regional conference in Portland next month.
This is the third CASE award for Window magazine. “,” a profile of Eric Dinerstein (’75) received a Silver award from CASE in 2012. Dinerstein is chief scientist for the World Wildlife Fund and is working to save the habitat of tigers around the world.
Window magazine is produced by Western’s Office of University Communications and Marketing, edited by Mary Lane Gallagher and designed by Chris Baker. The twice-annual publication is distributed to 草榴社区 alumni, donors, faculty and staff.
