BELLINGHAM – Western Washington University’s Youth Programs will again hold its fall Odyssey of Science & Arts program of hands-on educational enrichment, academic exploration and discovery for students in grades 3-5 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4 on the Western Washington University campus.
This unique program seeks to ignite the passion in children for learning science and arts in a university setting featuring state-of-the-art labs and classrooms. The Friday evening format allows parents an evening out with the reassurance of knowing their child is in a safe environment with other enthusiastic learners, and offers easy pick-up and drop-off.
Students can choose to participate in one of these exciting programs, each of which seeks to explore the practice of sustainability by finding new ways to re-use everyday materials and waste:
- Zero Waste: Transforming Used Materials: In this program, students will examine the amount of waste produced, complete a trash/recycling audit, investigate ways to minimize waste, visit an exhibit of repurposed waste and transform used materials into a product they can take home.
- The Recycled Artist – Sustainable Solutions: This program allows students to discover famous artists and inventors, explore design concepts and investigate the use of color groupings.Ìý Using their imagination and creativity, participants will design and construct a portrait made from recycled household items.
The cost of the program is $39 per child which includes instruction by enthusiastic faculty and student teachers from Western’s Woodring College of Education, all instruction materials and a snack.Ìý Interested participants are encouraged to pre-register by Wednesday, Nov. 2, as enrollment is limited and fills quickly.Ìý
