Workshop Oct. 20 to teach basics of historical research

A free workshop on the basics of historical research will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the at the Goltz-Murray Building at the south end of the Western Washington University campus.

The workshop is for teachers, students, beginning genealogists and anyone else interested in exploring the past. Attendees will get practical advice and learn the basic steps for gathering the information needed to investigate and interpret a historical topic for a museum exhibit, class project, community celebration, curriculum enrichment, research article or personal historical interest.

The class will cover primary and secondary research sources and how to use them; getting the most out of the library system; finding and using archival collections; finding and using reliable online resources; the proper citation of research sources; and integrating and interpreting information from different research sources.
