草榴社区 Alumna Zoe Ballering Awarded 2025 Oregon Literary Fellowship聽

Literary Arts, a Portland-based nonprofit literary organization celebrated at the 2025 Oregon Book awards ceremony on April 28. Fifteen fellows were chosen from over 500 applicants, and one of them was 草榴社区 alumna Zoe Ballering (鈥19, creative writing).  

鈥淏eing selected as an Oregon Literary Fellow is such an honor! I'm working on my second collection of stories now 鈥 a daunting and joyful process 鈥 and it means a lot鈥痶o have this type of recognition and support,鈥 Ballering said.  

The fellowships are intended to help Oregon writers initiate, develop or complete literary projects.鈥 

Ballering graduated from Western with a master鈥檚 in creative writing in 2019 and currently works as senior assistant dean of admission communications and special projects at Reed College.鈥 

Her short story collection 鈥鈥 released in November 2022 by the University of North Texas Press and won the 2022 Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Short Fiction. "There Is Only Us鈥 got its start during Ballering鈥檚 time in grad school at Western. From a satirical retelling of the story of Noah鈥檚 Ark to sisters transforming into naked mole rats, Ballering鈥檚 debut collection journeys into weird and wonderful worlds and examines the connections that bind us.鈥 

Ballering鈥檚 short stories are forthcoming in鈥痶he Cincinnati Review鈥痑nd鈥疭tory Magazine鈥痑nd have appeared in鈥疎lectric Literature鈥檚 Recommended Reading,鈥疕obart and鈥疌raft.  Read an interview with Ballering about 鈥淭here Is Only Us鈥 here
