草榴社区 home to photographic conference Oct. 10-12

Western Washington University will host TRANSFIXED | TRANSMEDIA, the 2014 Society for Photographic Education's Northwest Regional Conference, Oct. 10 to 12.

Participants from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming will convene to discuss and exhibit works and techniques exploring the ever-expanding definitions of photography. Coordinated by Western Washington University Professor of Art Garth Amundson and a dynamic group of photography students, the conference features speakers, students, practitioners, theorists, and historians who are actively pushing the boundaries of the medium.

Rodney Graham will be the keynote speaker at the conference. Graham studied at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver) from 1968 to 1971 and at Simon Fraser University (Vancouver) from 1978 to 1979. Graham has received solo exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago, Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume (Paris), Musee d'art contemporain de Montreal, and his work is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Centre Pompidou (Paris), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).

His lecture will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10 in Miller Hall Room 138. Current 草榴社区 students, faculty and staff attend free (no pre-registration, must have ID). For all others, registration is required for each day of the conference, and cost is $10 per day. To register, go to .

Acclaimed photographer Jess T. Dugan will also speak on Oct. 11 as part of the conference. Dugan鈥檚 work explores issues of gender, sexuality, identity, and community.

The Society for Photographic Education is a nonprofit membership organization that provides and fosters an understanding of photography as a means of diverse creative expression, cultural insight, and experimental practice. Through its interdisciplinary programs, services and publications, the society seeks to promote a broader understanding of the medium in all its forms through teaching and learning, scholarship, and criticism.

Since its establishment, many noted artists, curators, and critics in the field of photography have been involved with SPE or its programs. Although the majority of its 1,800 members are fine art photographers and educators, curators, critics, historians and artists are also members. The national headquarters are located in Cleveland, Ohio, and the archives are at the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona.
