²έΑρΙηΗψ Huxley College Dean Bradley Smith Appointed to North Pacific Research Board
Contact: Bradley Smith, ²έΑρΙηΗψ Huxley College of the Environment, (360) 650-3521; Brad.Smith@wwu.edu; BELLINGHAM β Bradley Smith, dean of Huxley College of the Environment at Western Washington University, has been appointed to the North Pacific Research Board by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke. βThe Board plays a critical role in recommending marine research initiatives in the North Pacific, and I believe your knowledge and experience will make you a valuable member of the Board,β Locke said in an April 8 letter to Smith. supports research to build a clear understanding of the North Pacific, Bering Sea, and Arctic Ocean ecosystems. Congress created the NPRB in 1997 to recommend marine research initiatives to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, who makes final funding decisions. βIt is an honor to be a member of this Board that helps direct crucially important research on the effective management and sustainable use of marine resources in the North Pacific,β Smith said. The Board has 20 members mainly from Alaska, Washington and Oregon. Its home office is in Anchorage, Alaska. Smith will be serving a three-year term on the Board. Smith earned his doctorate in 1981 from the University of Michiganβs School of Natural Resources and Environment. He has been a Fulbright Scholar to England and a NATO Fellow.ΜύHe served as a senior environmental advisor to several major corporations and as an external evaluator for the U.S. Department of Energy. Formerly Smith served as an appointed member of President Clintonβs Council for Sustainable Development (Education Task Force). In 2007, EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson appointed Smith to the EPAβs National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology (NACEPT), which advises the EPA on domestic and international policy issues. He also was appointed to the Commission on Education and Communication Steering Committee of the prestigious, Switzerland-based International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Smith also is a member of Washington Stateβs Fish and Wildlife Commission, to which he was appointed by the governor. Smithβs research projects have included waterfowl, shorebird and wetland research for Environment Canada and the Canadian Fish and Wildlife Service and watershed management in the Great Lakes region. Of particular interest to him is the creation of multi-disciplinary environmental program partnerships. is one of the oldest environmental colleges in the nation and a recognized national leader in producing the next generation of environmental stewards.
