草榴社区 Student Journalists Win Three Categories in the SPJ Regional Mark of Excellence Awards
Western Washington University had three student journalist winners and several additional finalists in the Region 10 Mark of Excellence (MOE) Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) released Monday, April 23.
鈥婼PJ鈥檚 Region 10 includes Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.
Winners:
- Erasmus Baxter and Alexis Edgar, Best In-Depth Reporting for 鈥淩ental Inspection Results Reveal Issues with Landlords in York and Sehome Neighborhoods鈥
- Jesse Nichols and Kjell Redal, Best Online/Digital Feature Videography for 鈥淭roubled Waters鈥
- Suzanna Leung, Best Editorial Writing for 鈥淪tate Legislature Undervalues Western Students鈥 Need for Mental Health Services;鈥 鈥淏ellingham Bridge Honoring Confederate General Needs Name Change;鈥 鈥淲hatcom GOP鈥檚 Support of Eric Bostrom Promotes Hate鈥

- October Yates, Online/Digital Feature Videography finalist for 鈥淪tone Cold Sober鈥
- Alex Halverson, Feature Writing finalist for 鈥淰eteran鈥檚 Rescued Flag Receives Honor Guard, 50 Years Later鈥
- Brian Yasui, Non-Fiction Magazine Article finalist for 鈥淟isten Closely鈥
- Miranda Abrashi, Feature Photography finalist for 鈥淓ye in the Sky
Baxter, Edgar, Nichols, Redal and Leung will all be moving on to compete at the national level against other winners from the 12 SPJ regions. The results will be announced in September.
