BELLINGHAM – The Western Washington University Debate Union will be working together with Community to Community (C2C), the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship, and the Skagit Immigrant Rights Council to host the 8th Annual Community Advocacy Support Center (CASCAID) Conference, “Immigration Reform: Human Rights on Our Border,” from April 29-30.
The event is free and open to the public.
On Friday, April 29, events will take place at ’s Communication Facility Room 115:
4-4:30 p.m. – Registration and Information in the Communication Facility Lobby
4:30-6 p.m. – Undergraduate Academic Research Presentations
6-7 p.m. – Public Debate on Border Security (debate students from and Whatcom Community College)
7-7:30 p.m. – Public Reception (including announcement of the Undergraduate Advocacy Award)
7:30-9 p.m. – Dignity Dialogue (facilitated by grassroots immigrant rights activist Maru Villalpando)
On Saturday, April 30, events will move to the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship Hall:
9:30 a.m. – Registration and Information
10-11:30 a.m. – Interactive and informative panel discussion (moderated by immigration attorney Hannah Stone, featuring Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo, Lt. Col. Margaret Stock, and Villalpando)
11:30 a.m.-noon – Community meal of traditional Mexican dishes; requested donation
noon-2 p.m. – Dignity Dialogue (facilitated by Liz Jennings, Whatcom Coalition for Healthy Communities)
The CASCAID Conference features a variety of workshops, undergraduate academic research presentations, and discussion forums centered on the conference theme and presented by various campus groups and community organizations. Additionally, a cash scholarship is awarded to the top undergraduate research paper submitted.
The intention is to have a broad and inclusive conference which will allow people of differing perspectives to come together to have a civil and meaningful exchange of views. Over the years, the CASCAID Conference has seen participants from nearly a dozen states, more than 20 universities and colleges, and three different countries.
