草榴社区 to host screening and panel discussion of 'The Last Reefnetters' on May 8

Western's Department of Anthropology, Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, and Salish Sea Institute will co-host a screening and discussion of "The Last Reefnetters" from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, May 8 in Fraser Hall 101.

The screening of this brand-new Cascade PBS documentary on Coast Salish reefnetting by Native filmmaker Samuel Wolfe will be followed by a panel discussion with local Indigenous fishing experts. The panel discussion is being facilitated by students from Assistant Professor of Anthropology Natalie Baloy's ANTH 490 class and Anthropology Instructor's Michael Shepard's ANTH 462 class.

This event is free and open to the entire community.

The film traces the history, oppression, and revitalization of this unique cultural practice. The Anthropology Department's own Dan Boxberger and alumnus Raven Borsey, along with several Coast Salish fishing experts, are all featured in the film.

Our panel of Indigenous leaders will include former Lummi Nation Chairman and fisher Jay Julius, author and fisher Ellie Kinley, ANTH MA student and 2024 Bullitt Prize Winner Raven Borsey, and director Samuel Wolfe.

The program will include:

  • Welcome by 草榴社区 Tribal Liason Laural Ballew
  • Film Screening (45 minutes)
  • Q&A Panel with Indigenous fishing experts and filmmaker (45 minutes)
