BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University鈥檚 College of Fine and Performing Arts will begin a new quarter of its youth enrichment program, Western Arts Preparatory Academy (WAPA), in September 2012.

WAPA offers a variety of youth programs that focus on providing youth with life-enhancing skills and broadening their perspectives in a safe, friendly and fun atmosphere. The academy will offer two types of classes in fall 2012: dance and violin.

In WAPA dance classes, children will:

  • Experience dance through fun, age appropriate activities taught by dynamic instructors.
  • Learn by using a variety of props, stories and musical styles.
  • Improve strength and flexibility with the graceful art of ballet.
  • Build strong bodies, confidence and self-awareness in creative dance classes.
  • Find rhythm and coordination in hip-hop classes.

In WAPA violin lessons, children will:

  • Experience the rewarding process of learning to play in instrument.
  • Learn the Suzuki method, which involves parents, instructor and student in the learning process.
  • Attend a mix of nine private and three group lessons.
  • Become immersed in a musical environment and enjoy listening to music from an early age.

Dance students should be between the ages of 4 and 12. Violin beginners must be between the ages of 4 and 7, and once in the program can continue through age 15. Violin students and dance students enrolled in the Holiday Showcase Reparatory class will end the quarter with a final performance at Western鈥檚 Performing Arts Center Mainstage Theatre.

Students participating in WAPA classes will develop social skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives, including confidence, awareness, discipline, communication and organizational skills.

Dance classes will take place at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center in Fairhaven and violin lessons will be on Western鈥檚 campus.

Classes fill quickly, so prompt registration is encouraged. For more information, visit , email youth@wwu.edu, or call (360) 650-3308.
