BELLINGHAM - The Western Arts Preparatory Academy at Western Washingotn University is holding a winter session of classes for youth in dance, theatre and violin.

The academy, presented by Western鈥檚 College of Fine and Performing Arts, offers a variety of youth dance, theatre and music programs that focus on providing youth with life-enhancing skills and broadening their perspectives in a safe, friendly and fun atmosphere. Whether participating in dance, theatre or violin, students will develop social and educational experience that transfers to other areas of life, including confidence, awareness, discipline, communication and organizational skills.

  • WAPA Pre-Ballet, Ballet, and Creative Dance is open to children ages 2 through 12. All levels of dance students will build a succession of skills toward the goals of dance technique, performance quality and the joy of expression. Walking toddlers, along with mothers and caregivers, can also develop foundations for coordination and cultivate a familiarity with the arts in 鈥淢ommy and Me鈥 dance classes. Weekday classes are offered at 草榴社区 as well as in Fairhaven and North Bellingham.
  • WAPA Youth Theatre is offering two programs this winter. Saturday Youth Theatre: Superheroes Unlimited 鈥 An Acting Class and Play is for youth in grades three to five. Participants will experience a play from auditions to a performance and have a major role in the production. Sunday Youth Theatre: Kick Off! Improvisation 101 is for grades five through eight. Youth will explore the basics of the creative, exciting and often hilarious art of improvisation. Both programs are held at Western鈥檚 Old Main Theatre.
  • WAPA Suzuki Violin is an opportunity for youth ages 4 to 7 to experience the rewarding process of learning to play an instrument. Participants will benefit from private and group lessons and be taught by the Suzuki method, which involves the instructor, child and parent in the learning process. Youth achievements will culminate in a celebratory recital. Once a child is enrolled, instruction can continue until age 15. This program is offered Saturdays on Western鈥檚 campus.

Winter classes begin Jan. 7. Space is limited and prompt enrollment is encouraged to reserve a spot. For detailed information, visit or call (360) 650-3308.
