草榴社区's Western Arts Preparatory Academy Introduces Two New Youth Dance Instructors for Spring Session

BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University鈥檚 Western Arts Preparatory Academy announces two new youth dance instructors, Mandy Pidgeon and Shannon Tallman, for its spring session beginning Mar. 27. 聽

The academy, presented by Western鈥檚 College of Fine and Performing Arts, offers a variety of youth dance programs that focus on providing youth with life-enhancing skills and broadening their perspectives in a safe, friendly and fun atmosphere. Students develop social and educational experience that transfers to other areas of life, including confidence, awareness, discipline, communication and organizational skills.

Pidgeon has over ten years experience teaching modern, ballet, jazz and creative dance to students of all ages, and enjoys dancing with Dance Gallery of Bellingham, teaching and choreographing. She founded her own business, Local-Motion, in 2010.

Tallman received her bachelor鈥檚 degree in Dance from Western Washington University and is trained in a variety of dance, including ballet, jazz, tap, and hip hop.聽聽

WAPA鈥檚 dance offerings take place on Western鈥檚 campus and Firehouse Performing Arts Center in Fairhaven.聽 Spring classes include:

  • Ballet for children ages 6 through 12. 聽Bold music, stories, costumes and props, will help beginning dancers jump into the beautiful world of ballet. Intermediate and advanced dancers will progress to learning correct ballet posture and positions, ballet etiquette, the history of dance, combinations, and performance quality. Four class levels are available. Classes begin March 28.
  • Creative Dance for youth ages 4 through 9. Children will dance and move in a stimulating environment focused on creativity, group interaction and the joy of self-expression while exploring the concepts of creative dance such as shape, size, direction, level and pathway. Three class levels are available. Classes begin March 27.
  • Hip Hop, a new class offered this spring, for children ages 8-11. This class will emphasize better understanding of rhythm and coordination in the body. These concepts will be explored through a variety of mediums such as freestyle movements, set choreography and exploratory movement games. Classes begin March 27.
