In the student design competition, Kristen-Lehua Barcheski of Western Washington University Bellingham won first place for a lightweight rotomolded saddle stand, shaped like the curve of a horse’s spine. She won $2,000.

An app that makes a difference

His senior project involved the location of abandoned uranium mines on Navajo land and the protection of residents from contaminated drinking water.

And this won him recognition from the Environment Protection Agency in its Apps for the Environment competition.
