You can get from Seattle to Bellingham, Wash., by driving 90 miles straight up the interstate, but you shouldn鈥檛. The best route to this small city tucked where the mighty Cascade mountain range meets the sea can be more scenic and pleasurable. Veer off Interstate 5 about 15 miles south of鈥

Officially, the Merriam-Webster dictionary describes the term "cabin fever" as "extreme irritability and restlessness from living in isolation or a confined indoor area for a prolonged time." Unofficially, I refer to it as the "never-ending spell between winter and spring when people long to鈥

SAM isn鈥檛 the only lucky recipient of Virginia Wright鈥檚 love for the visual arts. In the 1970s, she set up the Virginia Wright Fund, which essentially bankrolled a significant outdoor sculpture collection at Western Washington University in Bellingham. Wright also shepherded Seattle鈥檚 1976鈥

The Virginia Wright Fund donated several well-known public sculptures to Seattle (including Barnett Newman鈥檚 鈥淏roken Obelisk鈥 in University of Washington鈥檚 Red Square and Jonathan Borofsky鈥檚 鈥淗ammering Man鈥 looming above Seattle Art Museum) as well as the campus of Western Washington University鈥
